Dental Crowns
Dental crowns, or “caps,” are usually made of porcelain and placed over damaged existing teeth. We typically use porcelain crowns to restore a tooth’s function and appearance after a restorative procedure such as root canal therapy. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, we use crowns to restore the tooth’s strength and appearance. We also use crowns to attach bridges, cover dentist implants, prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse or protect an existing filling in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Porcelain crowns will always be esthetic when applied over discolored or stained teeth to restore their natural appearance. The office also offers crowns that are non-metallic and virtually indestructible.
Dental Bridges
Bridges are natural-looking dental appliances that can replace a section of missing teeth. Because they are custom-made, bridges are barely noticeable and can restore the natural contour of teeth as well as the proper bite relationship between upper and lower teeth. Bridges are sometimes referred to as fixed partial dentures, because they are semi-permanent and are bonded to existing teeth or implants. Porcelain, gold alloys or combinations of materials are usually used to make bridge appliances. Implant bridges are attached to an area below the gum tissue, or the bone.
Dentures & Partials
A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and adjacent tissues. Complete dentures replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills the spaces left by several missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position. Dentures improve biting and chewing ability and speech. They also greatly enhance your facial appearance and smile. We have been successful in making partial dentures for people who have been previously unable to wear them.
Complete dentures are also called “conventional” or “immediate” according to when they are made and when they are placed in the mouth. We place immediate dentures right after the removal of the remaining teeth. One advantage of immediate dentures is that the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period after extractions. However, bones and gums can shrink over time, especially during the period of healing in the first six months after removal of teeth. When gums shrink, immediate dentures may require rebasing or relining to fit properly. A conventional denture can then be made once the tissues have healed. Healing may take several weeks.
